Tuesday - December 23, 1997: Galveston,
TX back to Conroe, TX
Happy 1st Night of
Chanukah!
Did a bit of sight-seeing
today as the dark clouds gathered and the fog rolled in. Apropos for a visit to Galveston,
reminiscent of the Great Storm of 1900 when half the town was wiped out by a Hurricane.
6,000 people in a town of 14,000 (or so) were killed that day and the town was
subsequently built taller by 15 feet so it wouldn't happen again. Today nobody died. But
we did do some more last minute Xmas shopping and visited the old McNeir Net &
Supply Company building that Desi's grandfather (a fisherman for many years in the
Gulf waters) used to own. Watie McNeir was married to Louise, and it was their house we
saw the day before if you read that part! The building is now half condo's and half
some-kinda-stores-that-we-didn't-know-what-the-hell-they-sold.
We then headed back North (through major thunderstorms and threatening tornado weather) towards Houston/Conroe again since Desi's new car (she had planned to buy it here before we came) had arrived at Goodson, Honda! It's a fabulous Black Currant Pearl colored Honda Accord with a lovely Gray leather interior. So far, Desi likes it alot! So does Brad and he looks forward to one day being allowed to drive it!
