Thursday - January 15, 1998: Durango, CO to Tuba City, AZ
Four Easy Pieces...
Out of Colorado and back into New Mexico and then into Utah and then into Arizona. All within a matter of seconds. Less than that actually, as we straddled all four states at once at the only place in the USA where one can do that (unless they're really really really fat). The Four Corners Monument is run by the Navajo Indians, and the $1.50 per they charge to sit ones fat ass down on four states at once isn't too bad. It gave Desi no end of silly joy as she ran from one state to the next, then ran around them all at break neck speeds. Well, you get the idea. We're easy to please.

Still more pleasing and almost as easy was the drive through the unworldly rock formations of Monument Valley. Stretching from Utah down into Arizona and costing no more than half a tank of gas or so, this is the backdrop for every Zane Grey novel cover you've ever seen. Very cool. Along the way we also saw herds of goats, sheep, cows in the middle of the road, and a Bald Eagle perched up in a tree!! And if we're not mistaken, we think we may have even seen a roadrunner being chased by a coyote with a rocket packet on! Not sure, but we think we clearly saw the word ACME spelled out on the side of the rocket pack, just before the coyote went headfirst into one of the towering balancing rock formations.

We got some miles under our belt today as we began to smell the evil stench of Los Angeles seep through the Accord's vents. Most of the day was spent in the car for a change. We ended up in the "town" of Tuba City. Ain't much here, but many of the roads are actually paved! We should be blowing by the big canyon tomorrow!
