Tuesday - January 13, 1998: Farmington, NM to Durango, CO
Rocky Mountain...Hi, Colorado!
We woke up this morning and just didn't know what to do with ourselves...After an important tet á tet with the ex-truck driver waitress at the Village Inn over pancakes, it was determined that instead of heading West, we should take advantage of being in the Four Corners region of these United States (see the map if you have any questions about which Four Corners we're speaking of) and hit a couple more corners before moving on to Arizona as we had previously planned.

And so it was decided, we'd head North for a day or two, towards Durango, CO! It was said they had a delightful downtown area, and indeed they did! Click here, to get a few pictures of Durango!

On the way to Durango, we passed only one town, and that was Aztec, NM ("Population: 5,506 very nice people and 6 old soreheads!") before crossing the Colorado border. As we passed over the border, into the only other state besides NM that we'd been to in 1998, like magic it started to snow the hugest flakes you've ever seen. Exactly what you'd like to see upon entering Colorado!

We found a lovely, renovated hotel room in an old building, on street level at the Jarvis Suite Hotel. Smack dab on Durango's Main Street (which is in the shadow of the huge San Juan Mountains) and across the street from the Central Hotel where, in 1915, Jack Dempsey defeated Andy Moore in a ten round contest for $50 - later going on to become World Heavyweight Champion in 1918.

It was once a rough and tumble outlaw and mining town, but now it's just darn cute, with way too many excellent shops where we are tempted to leave our money.

We rode into town early enough for Brad to do some work, Desi to take a nap, and then both of us to catch a great dinner at Francisco's and the 8:15 Jackie Brown at the old Durango Gaslight Theater. Our first movie in a while, we'd recommend this one. Though not as good as Pulp Fiction, it was still a darn entertaining yarn in the Tarantino style.

The evening ended with a brisk walk back to the hotel along the frozen streets of tiny downtown Durango.
